Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis

Board Certified Cosmetic Laser Surgeon Serving Reston, D.C., Tysons Corner, Ashburn, Virginia.

An actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly patch on skin that can develop from years of exposure to the sun. It's most commonly found on your face, lips, ears, back of your hands, forearms, scalp or neck. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis is one of the solutions we provide to our patients. In this article we talk about what is PDT? Then, we talk about the effectiveness of PDT treatment. Lastly, the importance of PDT for treating pre-cancers.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis

At WellMedica Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine we provide Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis. PDT is also a solution to other skin conditions. Photodynamic Therapy also known as ALA (PDT) , is a treatment performed with a typical photo-sensitizing agent called  Levulan ( 5- aminolevulinic acid or ALA) that is applied to your skin and then activated with the correct wavelength of light.

PDT effectiveness

PDT is a great option for people that have acne in blend with taking antibiotics or prescription drugs, that treat the complete body instead of just your skin. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis is most effective when 3 to 5 treatments are received. At WellMedica we space each treatment around 3 to 5 weeks apart. We also suggest PDT as a blend therapy for acne, indicating it is most effective when found in conjunction with other treatments and the right skincare program.

PDT can also be used in people with certain types of cancer to help them live longer and improve their quality of life. Although PDT works and causes few long-term problems, it’s not widely used to treat cancer today. However, it is offered in some treatment centers, (click here to find more about the PDT and its use in cancer) and is being studied in many clinical trials. Over the past few years Photodynamic Therapy is becoming more widely recognized as a valuable treatment option for localized cancers (cancers that have not spread far from where they started).

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat pre-cancers

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) for Actinic-Keratosis is also used to treat pre-cancers of the skin. It has been tested against pre-cancers in the mouth and other places. This treatment is also being tested for other cancers that can be reached with a light, such as malignant pleural mesothelioma and mycosis fungoides, a type of skin lymphoma. Some doctors may use PDT for these and other conditions, even though those uses are not approved by the FDA.
After PDT treatments, the overall texture of the skin is improved. PDT also helps post-inflammatory erythema and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. That is the red and brown marks that stick around after active acne lesions disappear.

Cautions: It is important to avoid sun coverage for 48 hours after your PDT treatment.

“Dr. Ali is not only a beautiful, highly intelligent woman but also an amazing healer. She treated my face, ravaged over time byrosacea, coupled with multiple broken facial blood vessels and transformed what was ruddy, red and sometimes purple hued skin into a clearcomplexioned healthy and totally makeup free face, and I thank her most graciously.” *

– Chris D.

“I think Dr. Ali is very honest and upfront. I didn’t feel I had to get 10 opinions before making a decision. I never feel pressured. Everyone is professional and top notch, the type of people you want to work with. I think the whole office atmosphere is wonderful, I feel friendly with everyone that works there and I love the products. When you don’t come often you feel guilty.
