Treating Skin Allergies

Board Certified Cosmetic Laser Surgeon Serving Reston, D.C., Tysons Corner, Ashburn, Virginia.

Cause of Skin Allergies

Skin allergies can include bumps, itching, redness and other skin conditions that irritate the skin. These allergies may not be easily identifiable because they vary so much often leading to confusion, and a difficult time diagnosing them. Most people get bother by their skin at some point in their life, making skin allergies quite common. At WellMedica, treating skin allergies is offered with the medical expertise of our Doctor. Rashes can be caused by many things, including plants (poison ivy, for example), and allergic reactions to a medication or a food, or an illness (measles or chickenpox, for example). Eczema and hives, both relates to allergies, are two of the most common skin rashes.

There are several types of allergic skin conditions. An immunologist, often referred to as an allergist, has advanced training and expertise to determine which condition you have and develop a treatment plan to help you feel better.

A variety of factors can cause skin irritations. These include heat, immune system disorders, medications and infections. When an allergen is responsible for triggering an immune system response, the irritation is an allergic skin condition.

How to Avoid Skin Allergies?

Skin allergies can be avoided if you take precautionary measures. Following the instructions by the doctors can help you avoid becoming a victim of skin irritations and allergies. By following the instructions below you can minimize the risk factors that can damage your skin.

  • Avoid excessive heat and warmth situations that lead to sweating.
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Drink plenty of water.
Caution: For most children, changing the diet or using special formulas does not seem to prevent allergies. If a parent, brother, sister, or other family member has a history of eczema and allergies, discuss feeding with your child's doctor.

There is also evidence that being exposed to certain allergens (such as dust mites and cat dander) in the first year of life may prevent some allergies. This is called the "hygiene hypothesis." It came from the observation that infants on farms tend to have fewer allergies than those who grow up in more sterile environments. However, older children do not seem to benefit.
