Treating Telangiectasia

Board Certified Cosmetic Laser Surgeon Serving Reston, D.C., Tysons Corner, Ashburn, Virginia.

What is it?

It is an condition that contains an abnormal bunching of superficial capillaries. They are sometimes referred to as arterioles, spider veins, or venules. The dilated blood vessels are usually red, blue, or purple. They typically measure between 1 and 3 millimeters across. They also tend to turn white under pressure. Often appearing spidery on the surface of the skin or an organ, these widened blood vessels can cause discomfort and cause some to feel unattractive. They often occur in areas that are easily visible including cheeks, fingers, lips, nose, and eyes. However, they can occur anywhere on the skin.

Are they dangerous?

Telangiectasia are usually considered harmless, but can cause itching and be painful due to the pressure of the veins. Although otherwise healthy individuals may develop this condition, telangiectasias are a cardinal feature of systemic and limited scleroderma, as well as dermatomyositis. However, for the most part they are usually a cosmetic concern that many would like removed from their skin.

What can cause telangiectasia?

There are several factors that can cause this condition. For starters it can be from skin problems such as rosacea, or acne. It can also pass down from genetics for if someone in your family has dealt with telangiectasia, you are much more likely to develop it. Excessive consumption of alcohol is another cause associated with it. Since, it can affect the flow of blood vessels and in turn cause liver disease. We are also more likely to have telangiectasia when we get older for that is when blood vessels begin to weaken. Other factors include pregnancy, sun exposure, trauma to the skin, sun and wind exposure, varicose veins, surgical incisions, and long use of oral or topical corticosteriods. Lastly, medications that widen blood vessels can also impact one developing telangiecstasia.

Caution: Avoid the use of products that expose your skin to different allergies. we do lose billions of skin cells every day from our bodies, so helping the process along isn’t such a bad thing. In fact, it makes sense to remove dead skin cells before they clog pores and become pimples.
