Are at-home micro-needling gadgets as good as in office treatments?

One cannot expect the same results with at-home micro-needling as treatments with a professional trained in skincare and aesthetic needs.  You will likely see results with at home gadgets, but if you really want to see a difference we recommend coming in to WellMedica and making a consultation with our Board Certified doctor, Dima Ali.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that uses a device with 11 small needles aligned on the outside that then are pushed or rolled over the skin.  This may sound extremely painful; however this skin is anesthetized prior to treatment.  One that has a fear of needles should not be wary of this procedure the microneedle length can vary from 0.5 to 3.0 mm, which is incredibly tiny compared to a standard needle.  These needles only penetrate the superficial layer of skin which creates “micro-punctures” in the skin.  Thus, the skin thinks it has been wounded and as a result the skin sends fibroblasts to create more collagen to the affected area. This then causes the skin to thicken and for texture to improve.  Other terms used for microneedling are the Dermapen and Rejuvapen.

What conditions can Microneedling help treat?

Microneedling can treat a series of different skin conditions helping patients to feel more confident in the skin they are in.  This includes all manners of acne scarring and pitting, injury and surgical scars, skin discoloration, mild rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks.  Microneedling is especially famous for helping those with acne scarring that have not had much luck with other treatments and devices on the market.  As stated earlier this treatment helps will collagen and elastin production making the skin more plump and appearing younger. Therefore, anyone could really benefit for this treatment. Skin needling is a safe and controlled method of treatment and it can benefit all skin types.

What to Expect?

As stated earlier the face will be numbed before the procedure begins.  The face will also be cleansed before treatment to make sure the skin is clean and bacteria free.  Then the needling will begin throughout the entire face.  Once finished a mask will be placed onto of the skin to seal everything in and insure the best possible results.  After the procedure the skin will be red and swollen from all the needling - very much like sunburn. However, the procedure requires minimal downtime making it an amazing treatment for those seeking a non-surgical procedure. Patients can expect redness to go down within a few hours or a few days depending on how sensitive the skin is.

How soon can one expect results?

After a few weeks the patient will see a remarkable improvement in the complexion (skin’s color, tone, and texture).  One can also expect a reduction in lines, acne scars, and stretch marks on the face.  One can notice results up to 6 months after treatment making this a great investment for the skin.  Many compare Microneedling similar to getting a facial – the results just last SO much longer! It’s a great investment for your skin.

How many treatments do you need?

Although many patients only get one treatment, many doctors recommend 2-3 in order to get the best results.  Dr. Dima prior to treatment will analyze the skin and condition in order to come up with a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

Is this treatment safe?

It is absolutely safe.  As stated earlier the needles are so microscopic that there will be no real damage to the surface of the skin.  These devices are so gentle that they can also be used around the most delicate part of the face, the eyes.  It is also safe for all skin types and skin colors making it the perfect treatment for anyone trying to improve their complexion.
