Are at-home micro-needling gadgets as good as in office treatments?

SkinPen® can also be referred to as microtherapy, microneedling, micropen, dermapen or skin needling. The at home version, called derma roller or derm roller is also classified as microneedling. As a consumer, the options and info can be overwhelming. WellMedica has done the research and homework for you, and chose the SkinPen® for many reasons, most importantly the patient’s safety and sterility.

The at home use of derm rollers or derma rollers can be an breeding ground for bacteria or hepatitis, so we usually advise that patients steer clear of that option. Other in-office devices do not have the patented bio-sleeve technology that eliminates cross-contamination and SkinPen® is the only stainless steel medical grade device for microneedling on the market.

SkinPen® needle stamping creates thousands of micro channels or micro-injuries in the skin, which causes the skin to produce new collagen. The micro-injuries also create channels that allow product to penetrate more effectively into the deeper layers of skin. Essentially, SkinPen® can trick your body into producing a large quantity of chemicals that are designed to heal. Since there is no significant injury to your skin, the healing chemicals are usually able to rejuvenate instead.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a treatment that creates thousands of microchannels that stimulate your body's natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. These needles only penetrate the superficial layer of skin which creates “micro-punctures” in the skin.  Thus, the skin thinks it has been wounded and as a result the skin sends fibroblasts to create more collagen to the affected area. This rejuvenates your skin from the inside out. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.   This then causes the skin to thicken and for texture to improve.

What conditions can Microneedling help treat?

Microneedling can treat a series of different skin conditions helping patients to feel more confident in the skin they are in.  This includes all manners of acne scarring and pitting, injury and surgical scars, skin discoloration, mild rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks.  Microneedling is especially famous for helping those with acne scarring that have not had much luck with other treatments and devices on the market.  As stated earlier this treatment helps will collagen and elastin production making the skin more plump and appearing younger. Therefore, anyone could really benefit form this treatment. Skin needling is a safe and controlled method of treatment and it can benefit all skin types.

What to Expect?

This treatment has been clinically proven safe and effective for all skin types, Fitzpatrick 1-6 to improve the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin. Good candidates will be willing to commit to a series of treatments, and should have realistic expectations.

The procedure is quick, taking about 30- 60 minutes, depending on the area treated after numbing. Your skin may be slightly irritated with mild redness and swelling similar to a mild sunburn for a few days after the treatment, but irritation should not last long.

While multiple treatments can help you get the best results possible, you should notice results within a few days and full effects can be noticed after a few months. Since microneedling stimulates collagen and the body’s natural healing process, you will notice your skin becoming firmer, smoother, and healthier.

Through microneedling, you can even your skin texture and tone, reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles, and improve the health of your skin. This is a unique treatment that can help give you younger looking skin.

How soon can one expect results?

Results from SkinPen® microneedling treatments will generally become visible within 1-6 weeks of your session. However, several factors can influence the prominence of those results after only one session. For example, both scarring from acne and the overall age of the skin can impact your final results. Many patients who have substantial acne scarring or who have more extensive lines and wrinkles will often schedule multiple sessions in order to achieve the best results possible.

In most cases, SkinPen® or microneedling treatments will help the skin to appear more radiant and youthful. SkinPen® can help to mitigate lines and minor wrinkles, even out skin tone, and diminish scarring and damage of various types. This means that after an appropriate amount of sessions, your skin may appear smoother and healthier than before.

Many patients have claimed that SkinPen® helps make them feel livelier and more energetic because they love what they see in the mirror. With this feeling comes a boost of confidence and self-esteem that patients love!

How many treatments do you need?

One single session of microneedling does not give the same results as one session of aggressive CO2 laser or a deep chemical peel, but 4-6 sessions do provide dramatic results with much lower risk and downtime.  Prior to treatment, Dr. Dima will analyze the skin in order to determine a personalized treatment plan for each patient.

Is this treatment safe?

It is absolutely safe! As stated earlier, the needles are so microscopic that there will be no real damage to the surface of the skin.  These devices are so gentle that they can also be used around the most delicate part of the face. It is also safe for all skin types and skin colors making it the perfect treatment for anyone trying to improve their complexion.
